      MARC proposes radiator scrappage scheme

See below an interesting idea as reported in the HPV weekly magazine

The Manufacturers’ Association of Radiators and Convectors (MARC) believes a ‘radiator scrappage scheme’, similar to the successful programme to encourage boiler replacement, can help boost the UK’s green agenda.

MARC recently carried out research that showed 20% of homes in the UK still have radiators without convectors. This means that these homes can quickly and simply benefit from greater energy efficiency by replacing these with more modern steel panel radiators. The convectors increase heat emission from the radiators by up to 45% compared to those without any additions.

Now, the organisation’s chairman has written to Ed Davey MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, proposing the scrappage scheme. The proposed scheme is similar to the boiler scrappage scheme launched in 2011, which was a success with 118,249 householders taking advantage of the opportunity to improve their heating systems and reduce their heating bills.

John Colling (pictured) said: “Making simple updates and improvements to home heating systems could save householders money and prove to be a much more efficient way of heating their homes, with the added benefits that brings to the environment. Just like with replacement boilers, switching older radiators for newer, more efficient models can make a big difference and should be encouraged by the government.

“As an industry, we would be willing to discuss the benefits of this with the government, because we believe there is too little understanding of the ability of radiators to efficiently heat a home in this era of focus upon the environment. When you consider the relatively low cost of replacing radiators like-for-like, it makes sense to encourage homeowners to consider this option.”

MARC represents more than 90% of the UK radiator market. Its membership includes: Rettig Group (Myson, Purmo, Vogel & Noot), ISG (Stelrad, Henrad), Quinn (Quinn Radiators, Merriott), Zehnder Group (Bisque, Zehnder) and Kudox.

      1. Well it seems a no brainer to me, with the quoted figure of up to 45% improvement in radiator efficiency it would be madness not too. Seems like it would be in the interests of all parties to move forward on this, government can improve energy use, customers get better energy efficiency and the radiator industry benefits from increased sales. Now, whether the government agree or can be made to see the benefits is a different matter altogether, but fingers crossed!
